The world of synthesizers has a new contender that promises to redefine the boundaries of physical modeling synthesis: the Erica Synths Steampipe. Announced at Superbooth 23 and now officially available, this innovative desktop synthesizer is the result of a close collaboration between Erica Synths and Dutch developer 112dB.com. Steampipe offers a unique take on sound design, particularly for fans of wind and string instrument emulation.
What Sets the Steampipe Apart?
The Steampipe is an 8-voice polyphonic synthesizer, but unlike traditional synths, it forgoes conventional oscillators. Instead, it employs a physical modeling engine to mimic how sound is created in wind and string instruments. This results in rich, organic overtones and an unprecedented level of sonic authenticity.

This instrument is particularly optimized for performance with wind MIDI controllers, though it works equally well with any MIDI keyboard. Its ability to stretch the tonal and dynamic range of modeled instruments allows musicians to imagine how a flute or clarinet might sound in extreme registers like C1 or C7.
Direct Control Interface
One of the standout features of the Steampipe is its emphasis on a straightforward and intuitive interface. Unlike many physical modeling synths that rely heavily on menu diving, the Steampipe offers 32 adjustable hardware parameters, making it ideal for live performers and sound designers. Additionally, it includes a comprehensive modulation matrix and 5 assignable LFOs(Low Frequency Oscillator) with delay and sync.
Key features:
Physical Modeling Engine: Mimics wind and string instruments with 32 adjustable parameters.
8-Voice Polyphony
64 Factory Presets & 192 User Presets
MIDI Connectivity: Includes DIN5 MIDI Input and Thru/Out, with full MIDI CC control for all parameters.
Preset Export/Import via USB
Comprehensive Outputs: Stereo line level output, headphone output, and sustain pedal support.
Compact Design: Dimensions of 45.5cm x 27cm x 7cm and a weight of 3kg
Performance-Optimized Design
The Steampipe is packed with thoughtful details designed to enhance the performance experience. On the rear panel, it includes a power switch, power supply input, stereo output, headphone socket, USB, and MIDI connectivity. While it lacks a USB host port, the addition of sustain pedal support compensates for this minor shortcoming.
