Line 6 has expanded its POD Express series with the release of the POD Express Black—a compact, high-gain-focused amp modeler and effects pedal tailored specifically for metal guitar players. Building on the success of the original POD Express, which was launched earlier this year, this new version takes the powerful, HX-based processing engine and optimizes it for those seeking heavier tones.
Priced at $179 (or £169 in the UK), the POD Express Black is designed to offer premium high-gain tones at an affordable price point. According to Line 6’s Director of Product Management, Rick Gagliano, “It’s compact, fun, and easy to use, affordable, and most importantly—it features tones derived from the Helix family of products.”
The pedal features seven distinct amp models, each tuned for metal and high-gain genres, with names like “Cruz,” “Anvil,” “Slay,” and “Mega.” Alongside these amps, the unit comes equipped with seven speaker cabinets and 17 guitar effects, including distortion, modulation, delay, reverb, and even a looper. The four main effect controls double as secondary parameters for amp EQ, giving players intuitive control over their sound.
A USB-C port allows the unit to function as an audio interface, making it easy for players to integrate with their recording setup. Additional outputs support both mono and stereo configurations, while the pedal also features a headphone amp for private practice. For live or studio versatility, users can connect an expression pedal or external footswitches for extra control over parameters like tap tempo or effect toggling.
The POD Express Black is also extremely portable, powered by either three AA batteries or a 9V DC pedalboard power supply. Its small form factor doesn’t compromise on connectivity or features, ensuring it’s a go-to option for metal guitarists on the move.
With the newly launched POD Express editor, users can further customize and tweak tones with ease, addressing the lack of an onboard LED screen. This addition significantly enhances the unit’s usability by streamlining preset management and effect adjustments.
Overall, the POD Express Black is a highly versatile, budget-friendly solution for metal guitarists seeking Helix-level tones in a portable package. Available now, it stands as a practical choice for players looking to maximize gain without breaking the bank.
