Steinberg has unveiled Cubase 14, the latest version of its digital audio workstation (DAW), bringing a wide range of improvements and new features tailored for music producers, composers, and audio engineers. This major update includes a revamped Score Editor powered by Dorico, support for the DAWproject file format, a new drum track feature, and an array of effects and modulators designed to enhance creativity and streamline workflow.
Performance Boosts and Single Installer Convenience
One of the key updates in Cubase 14 is an overhaul of its core architecture. Steinberg has optimized memory allocation and data management, leading to faster start-up times, reduced load times for large projects, and smoother handling of large data sets. Additionally, Cubase 14 now includes a unified installer for all versions (Pro, Artist, Elements, AI, and LE), allowing users to install any version based on their license without requiring separate installations for upgrades.
Enhanced Score Editor Built on Dorico Technology
Redesigned Score Editor, now built on Dorico’s renowned notation technology. The new Score Editor provides a sophisticated notation-based MIDI editor, offering an intuitive interface for editing music in traditional notation. Users can directly export projects to Dorico for advanced formatting, quantization, and layout adjustments, ensuring high-quality printed scores with minimal effort.
While the Score Editor is designed to be user-friendly, a few limitations remain: support for MusicXML import and symbols like Arpeggio, Glissandi, and Octave lines are still pending future updates. Importing scores from earlier versions may also be limited due to differences in the new architecture.
Drum Track and Pattern Editor for Rhythmic Creativity
New track type for drum programming adds significant flexibility to rhythm creation. The Drum Track combines the power of a drum sampler and synthesizer, allowing users to create complex rhythmic patterns. With a multi-layered drum machine and a versatile pattern editor, users can build custom drum kits, randomize grooves, and experiment with dynamics to achieve unique beats. This feature is available in the Pro and Artist versions.
Six New Modulators for Enhanced Sound Design
Cubase 14 now includes six new modulators, expanding its sound design capabilities. Users can apply these modulators—such as an LFO and Step Modulator—to any audio track or channel parameter, bringing extra modulation and texture.

Advanced Effects: Shimmer, Studio Delay, and More
Cubase comes with a suite of new effects, including:
Shimmer: An ambient reverb effect that creates dreamy, atmospheric soundscapes.
Underwater: Adds rich, atmospheric depth to vocals and lead instruments, ideal for the “party next door” effect.
Studio Delay: A versatile delay with integrated modulation and pitch-shifting features for creative effects.
Autofilter: A dynamic filter that modulates its cutoff frequency with sidechain capabilities for rhythmic filtering.
DAWproject File Format: Seamless Collaboration Across DAWs
This release now supports DAWproject files, a new open file format enabling project transfers between DAWs without exporting individual stems. In collaboration with Bitwig, Steinberg has implemented DAWproject support to ensure that tracks, groups, markers, and even plug-in settings transfer seamlessly.
Although some features like automation and crossfades are not fully supported yet, these will be expanded in future updates. This new format aims to streamline collaboration and improve workflow for users working with multiple DAWs.
Event Volume Curve Enhancements and Compatibility Updates
Cubase 14 introduces a redesigned event volume curve editing feature, making it easier to adjust fades and static volume offsets with familiar draw tools. However, due to changes in this technology, projects created in Cubase 14 may have limited compatibility with earlier versions. Projects saved in this version can only be fully reproduced in Cubase 13.0.50 or later. Additionally, the DAW now uses a 64-bit project file format, addressing prior file size limitations and ensuring stability when using large audio extensions and third-party instruments.
Improved Project Management and Range Selection Tool
To make project organization more efficient, backups are now stored in a dedicated Auto Saves folder, offering users a more streamlined way to manage backups. The Range Selection tool has also been enhanced with new functions and workflows that improve editing precision and control.
End of Official VST 2 Support
As previously announced, Cubase 14 officially ends support for VST 2 plug-ins. The default VST Plug-in Manager now scans only VST 3 plug-ins, though VST 2 plug-ins can still be enabled manually, except on Apple Silicon.
