Originally announced in 2023, Behringer has finally brought SPICE to production, with units now shipping to retailers. In Behringer’s expanding lineup of analog synthesizers, SPICE adds a fresh, rhythmically charged option for synth enthusiasts. This semi-modular analog synthesizer, designed with polyrhythms in mind, features two oscillators, four sub-oscillators, a multi-mode filter, and dual 4-step sequencers.
VCOs: Rich Sound Layering
At the core of SPICE’s sound engine are its two VCOs (Voltage-Controlled Oscillators), each offering square and sawtooth waveforms, enhanced by two sub-harmonic oscillators per VCO. This setup allows for a pseudo-polyphonic sound by stacking the main oscillators and sub-harmonics, creating deep, textured layers that can fill out any composition. The mixer section includes level controls for both VCOs and sub-oscillators, giving users precise control over sound sculpting. Additionally, SPICE features a 24 dB ladder filter, providing the classic, warm resonance that analog synthesizers are known for, along with VCA (Voltage-Controlled Amplifier) and VCF (Voltage-Controlled Filter) envelope sections for refined sound shaping.
Dual Sequencers and Polyrhythm Generators
One of SPICE’s standout features is its dual 4-step sequencers, powered by four polyrhythm generators. Designed to simplify the creation of intricate polyrhythmic sequences, SPICE’s sequencers can be synced to an external clock or manually adjusted, offering users the flexibility to craft complex, layered rhythms.
Inspired by the Moog Subharmonicon, With Behringer’s Twist
Much like the Moog Subharmonicon, SPICE uses two VCOs and four sub-harmonic oscillators, inspired by the early Trautonium synth, known for its unique undertone generation. The relationship between SPICE’s main oscillators and sub-harmonics is mathematically derived, making it ideal for harmonic experimentation. This design also reflects a rhythm concept by Leon Theremin, enabling SPICE to produce complex, hypnotic polyrhythms.

Modular Capabilities and MIDI Integration
Beyond its robust analog engine, SPICE includes a 32-point patch matrix for modular or semi-modular synthesis enthusiasts. This patching area, located on the panel’s top, opens up a wide range of creative possibilities, allowing users to re-route signals and explore deep modular synthesis. Like other Behringer synthesizers such as the Crave and Edge, SPICE also integrates USB and MIDI compatibility, ensuring seamless connectivity with other gear.
