REAPER is known for its robust, flexible, and efficient features, with its recording capabilities being particularly impressive. Whether you're recording a simple vocal track, an entire band, or complex multi-layered compositions, REAPER has a recording mode that can fit your workflow. To choose the record mode you can right click the Record Button and select it from the drop-down menu.
Here’s a breakdown of each mode:
1. Normal Mode
This is the default recording mode in REAPER. It’s straightforward: when you hit record [Cmd+R/Ctrl+R], REAPER records the incoming audio to a new take in the armed track. This mode is perfect for most basic recording tasks, such as capturing a vocal performance or a guitar riff. You can easily set up a loop [R] within your time selection to record more than one take. This way you’ll be able to select your favorite or a combination of multiple different takes.
2. Time Selection Auto-Punch
In this mode, REAPER allows you to select a specific section of your track (the time selection) and only records over this part. This is extremely useful for fixing mistakes in a previously recorded track without affecting the rest of the recording. Simply set the time selection where the error occurs, arm the track, and press record. It will be recorded as a new take, so you can always decide to choose the original performance.
3. Auto-Punch Selected Items
Similar to Time Selection Auto-Punch, this mode focuses on items rather than time selections. You select the item that needs re-recording, and REAPER will only record over this item when you hit the record button. This mode is ideal for replacing or updating specific parts of a recording, as you can easily split the performance into parts and select only the ones that you would like to re-record.
This way you can record over the selected items in a loop to get multiple takes:
By exploring these modes and experimenting with them in your projects, you can take full advantage of what REAPER has to offer and ensure that your recordings are as professional and polished as possible.
